The KNESS Group has finalized the construction of a 100 MWh-capacity electricity storage system and is currently evaluating its control mechanisms. This information was shared with Delo.ua by the company’s communications team.
“The KNESS Group is in the final stages of executing one of the largest portfolios of energy storage projects aimed at providing auxiliary services to stabilize Ukraine’s power grid. All energy storage installations have been constructed and are now operational (with relevant construction completion certificates obtained). The total capacity of these projects exceeds 100 MWh,” stated the press service.
Currently, KNESS specialists are focusing on integrating these energy storage systems into the market, including comprehensive management through their proprietary Energy Management System (EMS). The initiatives follow a specialized auction for auxiliary services procurement conducted by the transmission system operator.
The press service highlighted that one of the energy storage projects utilizes KNESS’s proprietary technological solution. This system, developed from concept to prototype by the KNESS RnD team, was specifically engineered for Ukraine’s auxiliary services market. The installation has already received certification from the transmission system operator, confirming its technical readiness to provide Frequency Containment Reserve (FCR) services after passing required tests.
Energy firms gear up to activate storage systems under Ukrenergo tender
In mid-August 2024, Ukrenergo conducted a long-term special auction to procure 99 MW of FCR capacity for five years, ensuring grid stability. Winning bidders are expected to begin operations by October 2025, accelerating Ukraine’s adoption of new energy infrastructure amid rising demand for balancing solutions like industrial-scale storage.
By late August 2025, several successful participants have already developed necessary infrastructure. For instance, OKKO commissioned a 20 MW storage facility in February. Meanwhile, DTEK confirmed to Delo.ua that its specialists are progressively commissioning and testing storage units to meet transmission operator requirements, with full operational start planned for October 1, aligning with auction terms.
